Marketing Funnels, Engineered

Make your funnel pay for its own ads, counted in real money by an engineer who came back to marketing

Growing a business is a cashflow problem. For about five years I grew my own consultancy on zero cash: do the work, pay the team, wait about sixty days to be paid.

The numbers in the book are mine.

From my own accounts, dated, and labelled as money that reached the bank or as Meta's count.

About 60 days
I did the work, paid the team and got paid about sixty days later, for about five years, on zero cash. A funnel that pays back its own ads is meant to bridge that gap.
Source: my own consultancy.
A$5,911
My book campaigns spent A$5,911 by 12 October 2026 and did not pay back. That is small money next to five years of growing a consultancy on zero cash.
Counted in the bank. A dated figure.
$500 vs ~$11
Reaching one senior executive the usual way costs $500 to $1,000 a lead. A $5 book put directors, VPs and founders on my list at about $11 a name.
Source: my own account. $42 of ads to acquire each buyer, $31 paid at the till with the add-ons, $11 net for a name on the list.
What it's worth

Know what a buyer is worth before you spend another dollar.

A buyer's worth
The answer, and the arithmetic behind it

You work out what a buyer is worth across your whole funnel, the first sale and what they buy after it. Then you set the most you can afford to pay for one.

Keep, change or stop
A week of results, read without fooling yourself

You decide with numbers whether to keep going, change something or stop. When the sum works, your funnel pays for its own ads.

Why I wrote it

I bought nearly every marketing channel there is first.

I tried cold outreach in every form, organic content on a schedule, search, paid ads on several platforms, books with bumps and upsells, a membership, affiliates, creators, podcasts, retail listings and direct mail to a hand-built list. Cold outreach is fine for a $500 sale. A multi-million-dollar project is a different animal: trust, proof and timing.

Trust comes with a referral and a coffee with no pitch in it. Timing is the killer: supply teams, readiness to do the work. Seeds get planted for years until it lands. So the funnel in this book has two jobs: run that coffee-chat series faster, from cold, and keep the seed planted until the timing is right.

Ryan Richardson
Who wrote it

I'm Ryan Richardson, founder of Sixty Steps.

  • A psychology degree, a masters in marketing and an MBA, with a thesis on marketing psychology, then fifteen years in data and analytics.
  • I built analytics models for banks and miners. The habit that stuck is not trusting a dashboard that grades its own work.
  • Seven businesses and more than a hundred technical projects, and I have failed more times than most people reading this.
  • When my own company grew, the marketing was mine to solve again, so I came back with the tools.

Most marketing runs on gut feel and creative. Mine runs on data science and automation, and is counted in the bank. You get the book as an EPUB and a PDF, by email.

The problem

You sell what you know, and you are tired of gambling on ads.

Sound familiar?
  • Paying for Meta ads to send people into your funnel?
  • Meta's count and the bank's count never matching?
  • A dashboard full of clicks and no answer?
  • Trusting Meta's number without checking what landed in the bank?
  1. 01You spend before you know what a buyer is worth.
  2. 02You cannot say whether each buyer cost less than they were worth.
  3. 03You decide to keep going, change something or stop without numbers.
  4. Two instruments, two answers. Meta reports what it thinks it drove. Your bank reports what arrived. One week, Meta reported 28 sales and the bank settled 22. The book shows how I found the gap and what I did about it.
After reading

Five things exist that did not before.

1A number for what one buyer is worth, and the most one can cost.
2A kill rule and a loss limit, written down before the week starts.

Three more follow.

3 · Settled cash
A weekly page that reads from settled cash, not the ad platform.
We report what arrived.
4 · One price
One price moved and read on the bank.
Repricing on evidence.
5 · Five minutes
A launch checked in five minutes, with the campaign on the payment record.
A field manual of procedures, each ending with how you know it is done.
No result on anyone's business is promised; anybody promising an outcome in advance is guessing.
This is for you if

Written for experts who are good at their craft and tired of gambling on ads. You sell what you know: a course, a book, a program, a service.

This is not for you if

You would rather hand it over. My company runs the ads for your offer and is paid per buyer it delivers.

From the book · my own accounts

One funnel, my own, so I can show all of it, losses included.

Counted in the bank, or Meta's count

My book campaigns spent A$5,911 by 12 October 2026 and never paid back, and the book shows the sum that proves it.

A win is what everybody publishes, so it carries almost no information. A loss with a number on it can only come from somebody who was measuring.

Each number is dated and labelled as money that reached the bank or as Meta's count.

28 reported, 22 settled

One week, Meta reported 28 sales and the bank settled 22. I found it because the Stripe payout did not match the sales count: three senders were telling Meta about each sale.

After that the payment ledger became the source of truth. Meta and Stripe will disagree, and then Meta pumps money into whatever it thinks is winning, so the fix changes where the budget goes.

How Meta decides who sees a new ad

I give my own read of how Meta decides who sees a new ad, without the magic, with the check I ran on it.

The book leaves a funnel read from the bank, a buyer with a known worth, and a kill number written before the week.

Written with AI, checked by hand

AI drafted this book from my own records, like a team of juniors I briefed and checked. I did not write every sentence. The facts, the numbers and the money are mine.

Four rounds of blind AI review passed a batch of ads that carried a number nobody could check. I caught it by reading. Chapter 6 covers checking your numbers with AI.

The kill rule
Written before the week.

Kill an ad set when it has spent twice your target cost per buyer with no sale and is past day three. Twice the target is also the minimum spend. A loss limit caps the whole experiment, and you write it once, while nothing is running.

The number is written before any money moves, and a product that misses it dies on that number. A partner and I built a system to analyse swimming technique with an accuracy target set in advance. It topped out at about fifty percent, after real money and two years, and I killed it.

I am heavily ADHD. Starting things was never the problem, week eight is. So the number is written first.
